Sustainability at Heinrich Farms: Caring for the Land, Our Cows, and the Future

At Heinrich Farms, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a way of life. For generations, our family has cared for the land and livestock with a deep respect for the environment and a strong commitment to doing what’s right for the future. That means finding smart, practical ways to reuse resources, reduce waste, and support soil health—without sacrificing the well-being of our cows or the quality of the crops we produce.

One of our favorite examples of this in action is how we recycle water on the dairy. When milk is cooled through a plate cooler—a system that uses cold water to bring down milk temperature—we don’t let that water go to waste. Instead, we capture and reuse it as clean, fresh drinking water for our cows. It’s a simple process that saves water and keeps our girls hydrated and happy.

Our sustainability efforts extend beyond the barn, too. In the fields, we use no-till practices and plant cover crops to improve soil health, reduce erosion, and build long-term fertility. Cover crops help lock in nutrients, support beneficial microbes, and protect the soil during off-seasons—all critical steps for keeping our farmland productive and resilient year after year.

We also make the most of what our farm provides. After harvest, we use corn stalks in two smart ways: they become cozy, natural bedding for our animals both in and out of the barnsand grazing ground for our beef cows during the winter months. It’s a sustainable cycle that reduces waste, lowers feed costs, and gives our cattle access to nutritious forage during the colder season.

Sustainability at Heinrich Farms is about working with nature, not against it. We’re proud to combine innovation with common sense, always striving to leave the land better than we found it—for our animals, our family, and the generations yet to come.

Welcome to our farm stories!

We are the Heinrich Family (and more!) and we want to share how we are growing our farm one generation at a time. Together as a family we raise corn, soybeans, oats, alfalfa, dairy, beef and more!
